From Cramped to Revamped: A Growing Family Expands Their Forever Home
Home Addition & Renovation
Location, location, location is an old real-estate adage, and with good reason — after all, finding a house in Madison that is steps away from the shores of Lake Monona, the bustling shops and restaurants of Atwood Avenue, AND is within biking distance from your workplace is no mean feat! Doug and Kate’s home in the Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara location was just right — but it was also getting smaller by the day.
Or, at least, it felt that way after adding a few kids into the mix! That’s when they turned to the architects and craftspeople at TDS Design Build.
After working with Doug and Kate to fully understand the needs of their growing family (a powder room that fit adults over five feet was at the top of their list), our team added 680 square feet to the house, and remodeled another 490 square feet to create a more comfortable and functional home for their family.
A Cramped Layout Made Functional
We added an accessible ¾ bathroom and relocated the side entry to add a mudroom while giving extra space to the family room.
On the second floor, three cramped bedrooms were converted into four spacious bedrooms, a walk-in closet and a home office.
Before
The layout was tight and awkward.
After
Added space and functionality.
Exterior Improvements for a Classic Yet Modern Look
The house had several dormers that created a multitude of maintenance issues during winter and big rain storms. Our architects eliminated the dormers in the expansion to create more space and give the back of the house a classic look that fits in well with the other neighborhood homes.
Doug and Kate’s home addition and renovation gave them a functional space to grow their family in the neighborhood they love. We were able to make their space a home for years to come – goals that TDS ensures for all of our clients.
