A Boutique Hotel Morning, Right at Home

Bathroom Remodel

When our clients purchased a home on Madison’s east side, they called TDS Design Build to transform their dated second-floor bathroom. Working from a design by Krizia Villanueva of Oak and Olive Design Studio, TDS’s craftspeople and trusted trade partners executed every detail — from custom walnut cabinetry to meticulous tile work.

This second-floor family bathroom renovation project kept the same layout, but we modernized nearly everything else — replacing a window, custom walnut cabinetry, tiling the tub and walls, and tying it all together with unlacquered brass bath and lighting fixtures.

Before

Like bathrooms in many century homes, this particular one had been updated before, three times before, as a matter of fact. The latest renovation, dating from the 1990s, fit the character of the home, but time and daily use had worn away its charm, leaving an overall feel that was grungy and tired — not exactly a relaxing place to start or end your day.

After

Inspired by boutique hotel bathrooms, the renovation transformed a tired, dated space into somewhere the homeowners actually want to spend time. Custom walnut cabinetry, handmade Fire Clay tile, and glowing brass fixtures work together to create a room that feels warm, cohesive, and just a little indulgent — proof that a small footprint doesn’t mean small impact.

Custom Cabinetry Marries Form and Function

Local craftsman Kazuya Watanabe built every piece of cabinetry in this bathroom — vanity, sliding medicine cabinet, and a storage closet — in natural walnut with grain so fine you want to reach out and touch it. The warm wood grounds the space and proves that storage doesn’t have to be an afterthought.

Traditional Tile, with a Twist

This bathroom proves that subway tile doesn’t have to be boring. Handmade Fire Clay tile covers the walls and tub surround in a classic ½ running bond pattern, yet feels cozy thanks to the warm white color. A pencil liner cap rail in deepest, darkest green wraps around the room and ties into an accent stripe in the shower, creating one seamless visual line that makes the space feel cohesive. Spruce Point, one of our most skilled tile trade partners, executed the installation flawlessly.

Brass Strikes a Balance

Kohler fixtures in unlacquered brass are warm and inviting without overwhelming the space. Sophisticated globe sconces flank the mirror, their soft glow complementing the walnut cabinetry. Against the white tile, the brass adds brightness that feels timeless, not trendy.

Serenity, Now

The homeowners wanted a bathroom that felt like an escape — something inspired by the boutique hotels they loved. Now, instead of rushing through their morning routine, they linger. That’s the power of good design, quality materials, and craftsmanship that gets every detail right.

Designed for Today, Built to Last for Decades

This bathroom remodel showcases what’s possible when decisive clients, skilled trades, and thoughtful design come together. The result is a space that modernizes a historic home without losing its soul — calm, clean, and built to serve this family for years to come.
