First, Dream Big
Start creating your inspiration board
This can be the most challenging part, but once you start, you won’t be able to stop…trust us. Start by collecting photos of projects you like using your favorite photo gathering app, like Pinterest, iCloud, or Houzz. If you haven’t heard of Houzz, we encourage you to check it out. Houzz has terrific features and 20 million interior design photos and decorating ideas, so you’ll have no issue finding inspiration.
And, this is key—as you add your photos to each board, take note of what drew you to the image. Is it the hardware on the sink, the color, shape, or finish of the tile, or the feel of the space? The more detail, the better.
Second, It’s Time to Edit
Take A Long Hard Look at Your Inspiration Board
Take some time and look at what you picked out. Eliminate anything that doesn’t speak to you or doesn’t make sense in the context of your other selections. Now is an excellent time to create a mission statement or phrase for your remodel. It can be as simple as a phrase like “Hygge Homestead” or as complex as “My partner and I need a calming retreat for our primary suite that makes us feel like we are on vacation every day.” Although it seems a bit over the top, having a mission statement can help you distill your ideas; and help our designers find unique selections and solutions for your remodel.
Third, Let’s Get Technical
Features, Sustainability, and Future-Proofing
Are there any must-have features you require for this project—for example, your bathroom must have a heated floor or your kitchen needs under cabinet kick drawers?
Are you interested in sustainable materials? What about sustainable technology, like a smart thermostat that can regulate your home’s temperature with ease? Or how about other energy-efficient appliances?
Write down your list of must-haves. We’ll need it for step four.
Four, Time to Budget
Plant Your Feet on The Ground and Set a Realistic Budget
Now that you know what you like, let’s set a realistic budget. While this may not be the most exciting part of your renovation project, assessing your budget is one of the most vital tasks before deciding what you CAN do.
So ask yourself… how much can you afford to spend on your project? Which aspects of your project are the most important to you? What can be swapped out or cut, and what is non-negotiable? (We know you need that reading nook.) We can talk about all of this during our consultation, but it’s essential to come in with a clear idea of what you can afford.
It’s a difficult time to remodel right now due to labor and material shortages. However, it’s a great time to get your ducks in a row so that when you fit in the schedule, you are ready to go!
