Meet Sam Anderson, TDS Design Build Architectural Designer
Few design professionals bring the depth of experience, artistic sensibility, and sheer personality that Sam contributes to the TDS Design Build team. A standout talent with an unconventional career path, Sam has cultivated an approach to crafting spaces that masterfully blend beauty and functionality.
An Unconventional Origin Story
Sam’s story begins in a small northern Minnesota town on a family farm near the Canadian border. Snowmobiles were both a mode of transportation and his first artistic inspiration. As a kid, Sam perfected side elevation drawings of snowmobiles and helmets, a foreshadowing of his future in architectural design.
Sam’s love for drawing intricate details landed him at the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with a degree in Architecture (and Norwegian).

Architectural Designer
But Sam’s career trajectory wasn’t a straight line. After managing a restaurant, working in a high-end landscaping and furniture design office, and even dabbling as a bike mechanic, Sam landed at Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright’s renowned architectural school and studio. This eclectic journey gave him hands-on experience in preservation, cabinetry, and design.
Life in Madison: Living the Dream
Now based in Madison’s Owen Park area, Sam lives with his family in a unique mid-century modern home that he describes as part ski chalet, part California Modern, with a “woodsy” vibe. The house, designed by architect Ray Stork, reflects elements of Frank Lloyd Wright and Mackintosh’s influence—a perfect fit for Sam’s aesthetic.
Working on his house is a passion project. Sam is currently renovating the primary bathroom and updating the living room, all while balancing the demands of family life and a busy career.
About That Mullet
Sam’s mullet, a work in progress, is more than just a hairstyle—it symbolizes his unconventional path and ability to embrace the unexpected. He’s quick to credit Jess, his barber on Madison’s west side, for her role in shaping this personal statement. Having cut his own hair for years, Sam appreciates the value of expert guidance—a lesson that carries over into his design philosophy – hire experts for the best results!
A Multidimensional Role at TDS Design Build
At TDS Design Build, Sam’s role as an architectural designer goes beyond traditional design. He bridges the gap between conceptual design and hands-on execution, a rare combination that sets him apart. “I can design a cabinet and build it,” he explains, highlighting the practical expertise he brings to every project.
Sam thrives on tackling the unpredictable challenges of remodeling. Whether it’s adjusting for an out-of-square wall or resolving structural issues in an older home, he relishes the problem-solving process. His favorite recent project—a kitchen addition—epitomized this blend of creative design and construction precision.
